When doing initial designs from my Criminal Damage brief, I realised hula girls was a recurring image when looking at vintage hawaiian/surf graphics, I also noticed the images were quite similar to the popular Pin up girl tattoos, so I wanted to go with this style.
In addition to looking at (a lot of bad) pin up girl tattoos, I found this fantastic artist - Bawidamann - who specialises in modernising the classic pin up girl. Just by vectorising them I think it brings them up to date but its clear that the pose and facial expression is very important when it comes to maintaining the pin up girl style.
